How to setup Outlook Express for SMTP Authentication
In an effort to combat the rising tide of Unsolicited Commercial Email, or "spam", all RIVA.NET email servers have dropped the use of their outgoing email servers for anyone who has not set their PC's email program to use "Outgoing (SMTP) Authentication by username and password. If you are not able to send outgoing email, the steps for making the necessary changes are given below. By making these changes, you will enhance the anti-spam that we provide and further reduce the very few spam messages that do get through to your email inbox.
Please note: In each of these screens, substitute your actual email domain in place of the generic domain given in the screen pictures. For example, replace "mail.mydomain.com" with "mail.riva.net" if your email address ends in "@riva.net", "mail.uschoice.net" if your email address ends in "@uschoice.net", and so forth.
| 1.) Click on "Tools" from the Outlook Express Menu. Then
click on one of the following "Accounts" or "Email Accounts"
depending on the version of Outlook Express that you are running.
You should see the following screen called "Internet Accounts"
2.) Click on the "Mail" tab. Click on the the Mail Account you are going to change to highlight it. Then click on "Properties" or "Change".
3.) On the Email Account Properties page click on "Servers".
4.) On the "Servers" page check the box under the heading "Outgoing Mail Server" below for "My server requires authentication". After checking the box, there should be a green check mark in the box.
5.) Click on the "Settings" button"
6.) Make sure to use "Use same settings as my incoming mail server". This should already be set by default.
7.) Click "OK" to save changes. Some users may need to, and we recommend all users go next to the "Advanced" tab and change the SMTP Port number from 25 to 587, to enable the secure outgoing "stealth" port that is unknown to spammers. Click "Apply" and then "OK". That is al there is to it! You should now be able to send email using SMTP-Auth via the RIVA.NET email servers. |
